The Challenge
The AIMS Road crossing in Cungulla, south of Townsville, is the only road in and out for the local community. It crosses low-lying tidal mud flats that flood regularly - from heavy rain, high tides, or both. Residents had no reliable way to know whether the road was passable without driving out to check, and contractors doing emergency coastal protection work had no visibility on how long they could safely remain on-site.
What We Deployed
At the request of Townsville City Council, LiXiA deployed water level sensors at two locations on the AIMS Road crossing. The system was operational within 48 hours of the request. Data feeds into a publicly accessible live dashboard, giving residents and council staff real-time visibility on water levels and road conditions around the clock.
The Results
The dashboard is actively used by the Cungulla community. During the initial deployment, contractors doing emergency foreshore protection work used the live data to extend their working time on-site - because they could see actual water levels rather than relying on broad flood warnings to decide when to leave.
What the Community Said
It's really helpful to have an indication of the water levels at this crossing at all times. It takes the guesswork out - now we know when it is safe to drive through. It also saves the time it would normally take to drive out and check the levels, now we can do that before deciding to start the journey.
